Blackberry Deadlock Continues ...

It seems that Blackberry episode is not going to end easily.

Research In Motion (RIM) has said it is unable to give the Indian government access to messages sent by its enterprise clients over the BlackBerry service.

The BlackBerry security architecture for enterprise customers is specially designed to exclude the capability for RIM or any third party to read encrypted information under any circumstances, the company said in an update to its Indian customers on Monday.

For enterprise customers, the security architecture is based on a symmetric key system whereby the customer creates his own key, and only the customer possesses a copy of his encryption key, RIM said. The company does not possess a "master key", nor does any "back door" exist in the system that would allow RIM or any third party to gain unauthorized access to the key or corporate data, it said.

The Blackberry Puzzle Almost Solved

The government is looking nearer finding a solution for the long-pending issue around usage of Blackberry smart phones in India.

Yesterday, a leading business daily reported that Canada-based Research in Motion (makers of Blackberry) might allow the Indian government to intercept non-corporate emails sent over Blackberry smart phones, ending the long-running dispute between the Department of Telecom (DoT) and RIM.

Jarpa (Java Packaging for Flash Lite Developers)

Felipe Andrade and Alessandro Pace have created Jarpa, "Java Packaging for Flash Lite Developers" .

The latest S60 phones support both Java ME and Flash Lite. Jarpa allows Flash Lite Developers to deliver their content as Java ME applications. The Java and Flash Lite can communicate via either files or a custom Symbian Server.

It looks similiar to Sony Ericsson’s Capuchin project except it is for S60.

UIQ Technology appoint Chairman of the Board

UIQ Technology today announced that Dr. Colin Tucker has been appointed to the position of Non-Executive Independent Chairman of the Board of Directors of UIQ Technology. Other members of the board come from UIQ's owners, Sony Ericsson and Motorola. Dr. Tucker has previsouly held executive positions at a number of mobile companies including Orange and Hutchison.

The UIQ Board's role is to advise the UIQ management team and continually assess the company's financial standing and contribute to strategic developer on behalf of its parent companies. An Independent Chairman is desirable in order to promote stability in the ownership of UIQ Technology.

When Sony Ericsson bought UIQ Technology from Symbian and, subsequently, when Motorola became a joint shareholder, there was an emphasis on good corporate governance and a clear ownership structure. The intention of both Sony Ericsson and Motorola is to keep equal shareholdings between current and future shareholders. This is probably a reflection on a desire to avoid complications similar to those that have resulted from the fragmented ownership of Symbian.

Microsoft Vista support temporarily removed

In a shocknig move, support for Microsoft Vista has temporarily been removed from the Nokia Software Updater. This is due to recent changes in certain Microsoft Vista configurations that cause the Nokia Software Updater to become unstable.

Nokia Software Updater can run on other Windows operating systems.

People First - Concept phone by Nokia

Nokia's fired out some interesting concept phones this year, but this newest "People First" design centers more on the functionality of the device than its physical shape. The idea is based around what Nokia calls "three human universals of the way people think about communication" which are time, lists and people. So instead of being the standard pile of multi-option menus, the UI relies on a scrolling history list, with the most relevant and recent things popping onto the top.Content comes first, navigation is shallow, and there are no metaphors or abstractions to confuse. New content is generated at the top of a singular vertical list settling over time into a personal history of events.

A dual layer display allows the user to balance energy efficiency with rich visuals. The user interface graphics are optimized for low-power and high-contrast B&W graphics. When an item is highlighted, a second full color display is partially activated in lieu of, or in combination with the first.

Nokia Communication Center

Nokia Beta labs have relased Nokia Communication Center

and has updated following applications

. Nokia Text Messenger
. Location Tagger
. Nokia Headlines

Nokia Communication Center

This new concept replaces four existing Nokia PC Suite features – Nokia Phone Browser, Nokia Text Message Editor, Nokia Contacts Editor, and Nokia Multimedia Factory – with one simple solution.

This is an early release with the following features:

Create and send messages easily
Receive, view, forward, and reply to messages as they arrive
Compose multimedia messages effortlessly with easy access to the images on both PC and device
Manage messages, and sort and group them to quickly find what you are looking for
Display all your messages in a timeline
Manage all the contacts stored on your device
Add new contacts with ease
Create contact cards complete with thumbnail images
Depending upon the feedback Beta Labs receives, this will be integrated into the upcoming PC Suite versions.

Known Issues:

1) Opening unread message might crash application.
2) Export/Import functionality might not work correctly.
3) MMS management/sending might not work correctly.

Nokia Text Messenger

The application fetches you the latest text messages from your connected Nokia device. Naturally, the latest messages are displayed first.

A gadget for Windows Vista, Nokia Text Messenger comes in two different sizes. If you want to place the application in your Windows Sidebar, you can opt for Nokia Text Messenger in a smaller size. The sidebar gadget lets you view three text messages at a time.

If you want Nokia Text Messenger in a slightly larger size, you can have it floating freely on your desktop. In this case, text messages can be browsed in groups of five.

Location Tagger

With Nokia Location Tagger, you can automatically tag your location data to your pictures. As you take a picture, your GPS coordinates are saved to the EXIF header of the JPEG file. You can use this data later, for example, to locate your pictures on a map.

In the near future, we hope to make location tagging a seamlessly integrated part of your Nokia experience. Until then, Nokia Location Tagger is a small standalone application that gives you a sneak preview. We are not planning to productize this application as such, but we’d love to hear your thoughts already now, so that we have time to take it into account in the mainstream development

Known Issues:
1)The pictures from secondary camera are not tagged. Nokia Location Tagger tags pictures from the main camera only.
2)In a very rare case, Nokia Location Tagger may not be able to tag picture with the error message "File is being used".
3)Pictures captured in burst mode may not be displayed in order in the Logs tab.
4)This version has been tested on N95, N82, E90 as well as N73, N81 with external GPS module (Nokia LD-4W). It should work on all other devices; but there is no guarantee at this point.

Nokia Headlines

Through Nokia Headlines, you can enjoy daily news, sports, and entertainment, provided by international and local branded publishers. The service is completely free from Nokia, and the experience is fully optimized for mobile. You can access your favorite publications via WiFi or GSM, and read the content either online or offline.Nokia Headlines is the new version of Nokia Channels.
